Chiropractors Face Criticism

What I particularly admire about Chiropractors is their strong belief in what they do. Chiropractic healing is barely more than 100 years old. During that time, it has faced an almost constant barrage of criticism and skepticism from those who fail to accept or understand what a Chiropractor does.

The first chiropractic manipulation took place in 1895 by the man who became known as the founder of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer. And what a struggle he faced. It even eventually landed him in jail when he was accused of practicing medicine without a license.

Chiropractic Has Grown

Palmer went on to establish a school for the study of chiropractic. Now there are more than 70,000 Chiropractors in the United States. Oddly enough, it wasn’t until 1974 that my home state of Louisiana passed separate licensing legislation for chiropractors. They were, I might say, a little late to the dance.

Cracked My Neck

My first experience with a chiropractor took place in about 1958. I was visiting my paternal grandmother in Florida. She had been a long-time believer in chiropractic. I tried to do a back flip. Of course, I had no training, and really had no idea how to accomplish a back flip. I tried it anyway.

It resulted in my coming down on my head and wrenching my neck. The pain was excruciating. I could not hold my head upright at all. I ran crying into the house.

Grandma to the rescue

Grandma could have called for an ambulance. Remember there was no such thing as calling 911 at that time.

Rather than panic, she packed me into the back seat of the car and drove m to her chiropractor’s office. I can remember being placed on a table and being told to “just relax.” Grandma said she was proud of the way I followed the doctor’s instructions.

Then, in an instant, the pain went away. I could move my head again. I could stand, walk bend and run. It all seemed so simple, yet so healing.

More to the Story

That was my first exposure to chiropractic healing. It was not to be my last. I would love to read your comments if you have had experiences with chiropractors.
