Goals Are The Secret to Success

Goals Are The Answer

Goals are your friends. If you don’t have them you are on a journey with no destination, no real roadmap to get there and you don’t even have an arrival time. People ask me all the time to speak about goals. As a speaker it is one of my favorite subjects.

Goals are so important to your success. They are the roadmap to where you want to be.

Recently I was a speaker at the Kirkwood Des Peres Chamber of Commerce. I was asked to speak on how to know your business is on track. There really is only one way. That is by having clear, well determined goals.

There is an old paraphrase from Alice in Wonderland that says, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” And that sort of sums up the relationship between goals and success.

The psychologist Edwin Locke first made goal setting the subject of intellectual study in the 1960’s. He established what we now know is true. There is a direct correlation between having specific, written goals and increased performance.

Think about five years from now. Where will you be? Don’t think about where you want to be. Picture where you will be. Make it real. One is just a wish. But if you write down a goal for five years from now you have a much better chance of getting there.

Goals have to be written down. If you do not write them down, they become lost in the clutter of your mind. Your mind processes about 1500 thoughts per minute. You just cannot set and keep clear goals without writing them down.

Start now. Write down a goal for where you will be 30 days from now. Then work toward that goal. Take baby steps. If you do not know what a SMART plan is, contact me. I will be glad to go over it with you for free.

Your success is important to me. I want you to have a life of achievement and satisfaction. Make that your goal.
